Nine Injured in Bronx Crash

According to recent reports, nine people were injured, six of them critically, in an accident on the New England Thruway in the Bronx. The accident occurred near the Connor Street exit. A Cadillac Escalade apparently slammed head-on into a wall near the Baychester exit on the northbound side.

The victims, who have not been identified, included six men and three women between 24 and 36 years old. The driver, a 32-year-old from Rockland County, was listed in critical condition as were five of the other victims. All of the passengers lived in the Bronx.

While the SUV was apparently under license from the Taxi and Limousine Commission, police sources have stated that they do not believe the driver had a valid livery license and may have had his driver’s license revoked. Investigators believe that excessive speed was a factor in the crash and are looking into the possibly of drug or alcohol use.

However, witnesses also noted that the sharply curved ramp at Exit 13 has been the site of many accidents.

Speed Kills—Really?

While Americans have become used to relatively low speed limits, they rarely observe them. One study noted that not only is there less than 50 percent compliance with most posted speed limits but the limits themselves often reflect a 15 mile-per-hour difference in the posted speed and the actual safe speed in that area.

However, even assuming that the speed limits are set too low, does speed cause accidents? Although various government agencies and groups such as the National Safety Council continue to use the “speed kills” statement to encourage drivers to slow down, but new studies suggest that speed is not actually what causes accidents. What is clear, however, is that when accidents do occur at higher speeds, the injuries are often much more severe than those sustained in low-speed crashes.

Whether a driver was speeding or not, if he or she causes an accident that injures another person, that driver may be liable for in the injuries inflicted. In order to collect compensation for these injuries, car accident victims may turn to a personal injury attorney.
