Woman Killed in Manhattan Pedestrian Accident

Crossing a street in Manhattan can be harrowing, particularly when there are drivers speeding down the roads and when the pedestrian is not using a crosswalk.  Tragically, both of those elements combined to lead to a Manhattan pedestrian accident that took the life of a woman carrying groceries home on Friday.  The driver attempted to flee the scene of the crash, but that driver was soon retained by a bystander who helped to bring the person to a halt.

According to police, the latest fatal Manhattan pedestrian accident occurred on Friday at approximately 3:15 p.m. when an unidentified woman was attempting to cross the street at West 93rd Street and Columbus Avenue.  As she did so carrying her groceries, the driver of a Dodge Charger came speeding down the street and slammed into her, knocking her several feet in the air.  The woman was killed almost instantly, and the driver was apprehended soon thereafter.

New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics

First and foremost, we'd like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed.  Losing a life in such a violent and sudden manner is always tragic, and we hope that justice is served in this situation.  In addition, this Manhattan pedestrian accident will now become part of the overall statistics regarding New York pedestrian accidents.  Every year, more than 15,000 people are injured and more than 300 people are killed in these types of horrific crashes.

New York Wrongful Death Lawyers

While it appears that the woman was partially negligent in not using the crosswalk, New York follows what's known as a 'pure' standard of comparative fault.  This means that if the family of the woman files a New York wrongful death lawsuit against the driver and it's successful, their recovery of damages would be reduced by the percentage of fault that's assigned to the woman.  This would be true even if the woman is deemed to be more than 50 percent at fault.

If you have lost someone you love in a New York traffic accident, you need to seek the help of New York wrongful death lawyers who have been holding those responsible for this type of harm accountable for nearly 40 years.  Contact Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald today to schedule a free initial consultation.
