Staten Island Pedestrian Accident Leads to a Fatality

Anyone who lives in or has visited New York understands that pedestrians are simply everywhere and an inherent factor in any traffic situation.  As such, those who drive anywhere near the city need to understand that pedestrians can be anywhere at almost any time, and some pedestrians may take a bit longer to get across a road than others.  Tragically, one woman paid with her life on Saturday after she was run down by a tractor-trailer.

According to reports, the woman, 64-year-old Therese Alonso, was crossing Richmond Terrace in Staten Island just before 9 a.m. on Saturday.  According to a witness, she was walking towards the Star food market located on the corner of Richmond Terrace and Port Richmond Avenue.  Ms. Alonso walked with a cane due to some physical limitations, and as she and a friend crossed the street, a large truck apparently sped up in anticipation of the light turning green.  The light hadn't yet turned green, and Alonso was brutally struck by the tractor-trailer and killed.

Apparently, the truck driver was not in a position to see Alonso given her position at the time.  Police have also stated that the driver will likely not be charged with a crime, but that the investigation was ongoing.  We'd like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Alonso.  She had two sons and was apparently well-known in her neighborhood.  We hope those who are affected by this sudden loss are able to overcome their grief.

New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Unfortunately, the loss of Ms. Alonso is far from the only one that tends to occur in New York.  According to New York pedestrian accident statistics, more than 15,000 pedestrian/vehicle accidents occur every year somewhere in the state, leading to almost as many injuries and to more than 300 deaths.  This means, when broken down, that someone is killed nearly every day in the state and more than 40 people are injured.

New York Wrongful Death Lawyers

Although it appears that the driver of the truck will not face criminal charges, he and the trucking company could face civil liability if the family of Ms. Alonso decides to file a New York wrongful death lawsuit.  If the claim is successful, damages could include lost income, loss of companionship and damages for medical, funeral and burial expenses.  However, these types of claims should only be brought with the help of New York wrongful death lawyers who have the skill and experience necessary to hold those responsible for these losses accountable.  Contact Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald today to schedule a free initial consultation.
