Staten Island Ferry Accident Leads to Dozens of Injuries

The Staten Island Ferry is a popular choice for transportation for many people and for many reasons, and one of those reasons is to avoid the dangers and hassles of driving a private vehicle through the busy and congested streets of New York.  Unfortunately, this ferry has some negative entries in its history, and another sad chapter was added to that history with a horrific Staten Island Ferry accident that occurred on Saturday.

The ferry is known as the Andrew J. Barberi, and it was involved in a fatal Staten Island Ferry accident in 2003.  On Saturday, the ferry crashed into the dock at the Staten Island terminal at 9:20 a.m. as it was finishing its commute.  The crash injured 37 people to this point, and the force of the impact punctured holes in the hull of the vessel.  The early word on the cause of the crash is that engine trouble prevented the ferry from stopping safely at the dock.

The ferry capatin noticed a problem with the engine at about the same time many commuters realized that they were moving towards the dock at a rate of speed that was too high to be safe.  The captain sounded an alarm that moved people away from the front of the vessel, and it's possible that these circumstances combined to save lives and limit the injuries at just above three dozen.
