New York Transportation Department Study Yields Some Surprises

Pedestrians are a mainstay in New York, and everyone who has spent any time here whatsoever understands that the flow of traffic involves working around those on foot.  However, New York pedestrian accidents occur at such a high rate that the public outcry has led the city's transportation department to complete a study on the issue.  The results of this study have been released, and some of the conclusions are surprising:

  1. Jay-walkers were harmed at a lower rate in New York pedestrian accidents than those in crosswalks.
  2. 40 percent New York pedestrian accidents occurred between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
  3. December was the worst month for New York pedestrian accidents.
  4. 80 percent of New York pedestrian accidents that led to either a serious injury or a death involved male drivers.

These statistics will lead the city to take some actions that are designed to curtail this problem, but many of those steps will not be revealed until they're actually taken.

New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Overall, the numbers regarding New York pedestrian statistics state-wide are large, and clearly the majority of them occur in the city.  Every year in the state, more than 15,000 pedestrians are injured in New York and another 300 are killed.  These statistics have held remarkably steady in recent years, which is yet another reason for this study and its purported responses.
