E. coli Infections at Birth

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a common bacterium that colonizes the intestines of humans and other animals, can be transmitted from a mother to her baby either in vitro or at birth as the baby passes through the birth canal.  Neonatal E. coli infections can cause serious illness, including meningitis and sepsis.   E. coli is one of the most common causes of neonatal meningitis.  E. coli bacteria can cause meningitis when they cross the blood-brain barrier and infect the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and the related fluids.  The result can be deadly; the mortality rate is 8%.

Survivors of neonatal E. coli meningitis often suffer brain damage.  E. coli-related sepsis is a severe illness caused by an overwhelming infection of the bloodstream by toxin-producing E. coli bacteria.  Sepsis is also potentially fatal, especially for severely premature infants.

Medical malpractice may be associated with a neonatal E. coli infection if any of the following apply:

  1. The E. coli infection could have been prevented
  2. The E. coli infection was not diagnosed
  3. The E. coli infection was not properly treated or was left untreated

Newborn (Neonatal) E. coli Infections – Medical Malpractice Investigation

Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald has successfully handled hundreds of birth injury malpractice cases, including cases involving E. coli infections.  If you retain Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald to represent your injured child, the firm will thoroughly investigate the medical records associated with your child’s birth, including records regarding the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post-birth care.  We will also consult with doctors who specialize in obstetrics and neonatal care.  If we determine that medical negligence caused your child’s injuries, we will take legal action against responsible parties.

If you would like a free consultation regarding your infant’s injuries, please contact Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald.  You may call toll-free at 1-800-323-9900 or submit the firm’s online contact form
