E. coli Infections at Birth
Escherichia coli (E. coli), a common bacterium that colonizes the intestines of humans and other animals, can be transmitted from a mother to her baby either in vitro or at birth as the baby passes through the birth canal. Neonatal E. coli infections can cause serious illness, including meningitis and sepsis. E. coli is one of the most common causes of neonatal meningitis. E. coli bacteria can cause meningitis when they cross the blood-brain barrier and infect the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and the related fluids. The result can be deadly; the mortality rate is 8%.
Survivors of neonatal E. coli meningitis often suffer brain damage. E. coli-related sepsis is a severe illness caused by an overwhelming infection of the bloodstream by toxin-producing E. coli bacteria. Sepsis is also potentially fatal, especially for severely premature infants.
Medical malpractice may be associated with a neonatal E. coli infection if any of the following apply:
- The E. coli infection could have been prevented
- The E. coli infection was not diagnosed
- The E. coli infection was not properly treated or was left untreated
