When something truly terrible and tragic occurs, it often leads to a reaction from the legislature of several different levels of government.  In the wake of a horrific Brooklyn pedestrian accident that occurred on May 12 that took the life of a four-year-old boy, it appears that the legislative process is once again reacting.  A bill is making its way through the state house that would require trucks to install mirrors on the vehicles that would eliminate the blind spots that are present on them in hopes that accidents like this one can be avoided in the future.  Votes are expected on the bill this week in Albany.

The situation was prompted by a Brooklyn pedestrian accident that occurred on May 12 when the driver of a meat truck hit and killed a four-year-old boy who was riding a toy tricycle on Heyward Street near Harrison Avenue as the driver pulled out of a parking lot.  The driver did not see the boy because of a blind spot and dragged him under the vehicle after the initial impact for approximately 200 feet.  When he realized what had happened, he stopped and remained at the scene.  The situation has been deemed an accident and the driver has not been charged.
