Crossing Guard Dies A Month after New York Pedestrian Accident

Crossing guards perform important duties that many people overlook, but their function is critical in regards to protecting the safety of school children.  Unfortunately, crossing guards can and do sometimes find themselves in the middle of a disaster.  Tragically, this was the case with a crossing guard who was hit in a New York car accident in November and critically injured.  She fought for her life for nearly a month, but eventually succumbed to her injuries on December 8.

The New York pedestrian accident that led to this fatality occurred in November, and it began as a New York car accident.  It occurred at the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Glenwood Road as the crossing guard, 61-year-old Helen DeJesus, was on her way to PS 315 to help with the dismissal of students.  She was hit when two vehicles collided at the intersection, and the force of the impact led one of the vehicles to veer out of control and strike her.  She was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries, and hung on for nearly one month before passing away.

New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics

First and foremost, we'd like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the woman who was killed.  This had to have been an excruciating struggle for those close to her, and while there could be some relief that her suffering is over, this is still tragic news.  In addition, this New York pedestrian accident will now become part of the overall statistics regarding pedestrian accidents that occur on a state-wide basis.  Every year, more than 15,000 pedestrians are injured and more than 300 are killed in these occurrences.

New York Wrongful Death Lawyers

While more information would be needed in order for a complete legal analysis to be done, it seems possible that the family of the woman who was killed could file a New York wrongful death lawsuit against the driver at fault in the New York car accident that led to her death.  If such a case was filed and was successful, it could lead to an award of damages that compensate the family for their medical, funeral and burial costs as well as their lost income and loss of companionship.

If you have lost someone you love in an accident, you need to seek the help of New York wrongful death lawyers who have been holding those responsible for these losses accountable for nearly 40 years.  Contact Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald today to schedule a free initial consultation.
