Brooklyn Motorcycle Accident Leaves Policeman Clinging to Life

Police work is obviously dangerous, and perhaps it's most dangerous when a police officer is in hot pursuit of suspects who are believed to be in the process of committing a crime.  It takes an enormous amount of bravery to pursue suspects in any situation, but particularly when doing so involves chasing suspects on-foot in traffic.  Sadly, a Brooklyn police officer is fighting for his life after he was hit by a motorcycle while chasing suspected car thieves on foot.

This New York motorcycle accident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. as the officer chased three men across 20th Ave. near 84th St. in Bensonhurst who were running from what was suspected as a stolen vehicle.  As the officer pursued the suspect, a motorcycle came by in the normal course of traffic and slammed into him.  It was a gruesome accident in which the officer was sent flying high into the air and then landed on his head.  He suffered massive head injuries and is currently in critical condition.

We'd first like to extend our deepest thoughts of hope towards the officer, identified as 31-year-old Carlos Olmedo.  Word was given that he is hanging in there and perhaps even improving a bit, but it will be some time before his family will know the ultimate result of this New York motorcycle accident.  Regardless of how the officer comes out of this, he is already a hero for willingly risking his own life in pursuit of criminals.

Authorities have also stated that the motorcycle driver was properly licensed and had not been drinking at the time of the collision.  He was not cited for the incident, and it appears he had no way of avoiding the officer who suddenly darted out in front of him while pursuing the suspects.  As a result, if the officer decides to bring a personal injury action against someone, it's likely that the most plausible defendants would be the suspects he was chasing, as they set in motion the chain of events that led to this result.
