When New York hit-and-run accidents occur, it adds an extra layer of stress for some and work for others as authorities attempt to identify and locate the driver involved. That process had already begun in the aftermath of a fatal Bensonhurst hit-and-run crash that occurred in the early hours of yesterday when a Brooklyn firefighter reported himself as the owner of the vehicle involved in the collision several hours later. However, the fireman would not say if he was driving when the crash occurred.
Police had already begun the search for an unidentified driver of a BMW sedan that had hit and immediately killed Manuel Tzajguachiac, 25. This Bensonhurst hit-and-run accident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. as Mr. Tzajguachiac was crossing the intersection of 65th Street and 20th Avenue. The BMW in question came through at a high rate of speed, slammed into the man and sent him flying into the air. He was killed instantly and the driver never stopped after the collision. Police are continuing their investigation, and the firefighter who reported that the vehicle was his is 39-year-old Pat Quagliariello.
New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics
First and foremost, we'd like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Tzajguachiac. He had only recently come to the United States to earn money for his family who remained in Guatemala. His loss is a tragedy. In addition, this Bensonhurst hit-and-run accident will now become part of the statistics regarding New York pedestrian accidents overall. Every year, more than 15,000 such collisions occur, injuring nearly as many people and killing almost one person every day.
