Bronx Bicycle Accident Leaves Teen Fighting for Life

Riding a bicycle in New York offers those who do so several advantages.  The most obvious is that they can move in and around heavy traffic conditions and maneuver into and out of places that larger vehicles cannot.  However, riding a bicycle in New York is also dangerous, and sadly, it appears that another person has suffered from the effects of a collision.  A local teen is fighting for his life after a Bronx bicycle accident left him on life support.

According to police, the latest Bronx bicycle accident occurred just before midnight last night down E. 188th St. when Alprentice (A.J.) Gray Jr., 18, attempted to turn left with a hand signal onto Webster Avenue.  At that time, a driver of a Volkswagen was heading south on Webster Avenue and slammed into the bicyclist.  At this point, investigators believe that she had the green light, but that has not been decided definitively at this point.  The collision smashed the windshield of the vehicle and Mr. Gray is now on life support.  As it turns out, the driver of the vehicle did not have a license.

New York Bicycle Accident Statistics

First, we'd like to send our hopes that the person who was badly injured is able to overcome his harm and recover.  This was a gruesome accident that occurred at the bottom of a hill at high speeds.  In addition, this incident will only add to the overall statistics regarding New York bicycle accidents.  Every year in the state, more than 5,000 such collisions occur between bicycles and vehicles with nearly as many injuries and almost 50 fatalities.

The critical determination to be made here is whether or not the bicyclist had the green light.  Even if he didn't, however, it could be relevant that the driver did not have a license.  Regardless, more facts would need to be uncovered before any determination regarding whether or not to file a New York personal injury lawsuit should be filed.  A successful claim would bring damages that include medical costs and pain and suffering among other forms of compensation.
