What is Angelman Syndrome?

Even though many people with Angelman Syndrome have excitable personalities are often seen frequently smiling and laughing, the condition can lead to severe developmental disabilities, neurological problems and seizures.

First signs of the condition are generally seen in the form of developmental delays between the first 6 and 12 months of a person’s life. Seizures will typically reveal themselves by the age of 2 or 3.

Additional symptoms include:

Speech impairment or no speech at all;

Difficulty with walking or balance;

Stiff movements; and

Tongue thrusting.

Angelman Syndrome, Autism and Birth Injuries

When a parent is faced with the challenges of a child with Angelman syndrome, it may not be evident that certain neurological conditions are outside of the normal deficiencies associated with Angelman syndrome. Birth injuries such as asphyxia, meconium aspiration, hypoxia and other conditions and occurrences can cause additional brain damage, including autism and seizures. Research has indicated that Angelman syndrome is better understood in terms of developmental delay, and autism in terms of developmental deviance. Both can be present, but diagnosing the autism is difficult. The Fitzgerald Law Firm can help you find out if a birth injury caused your child to suffer from autism or other brain damage.

If you retain The Fitzgerald Law Firm, we will:
