What is Beckwith-Wiedmann Syndrome?
Beckwith-Wiedmann syndrome is a growth disorder that is present from birth. It is characterized by a large body size, large internal organs, and abdominal defects. Children born with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome will most likely have low blood sugar. They will also have an increased risk of the following:
- Decreased mental development
- Development of tumors, especially Wilms’ tumor
- Feeding problems
- Hypoglycemia
- Respiratory difficulties
- Seizures and related complications
Legal Help for Children with Beckwith-Wiedmann Syndrome
The cause of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome is not known. There appears to be a genetic factor—about 80% of the children have a defect in chromosome number 11 (NIH). Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald has successfully argued that birth injuries, even those with a genetic association like Beckwith-Wiedmann syndrome, are caused by environmental toxins and/or neurological insults or complicated by these insults.
If you retain Fitzgerald & Fitzgerald to represent your child, we will attempt to identify the cause of the injury to your child’s brain that resulted in Beckwith-Wiedmann syndrome. If that injury could have been avoided, we will seek to recover compensation from those responsible.
