Fetal and Neonatal Basal Ganglia Damage
Basal ganglia are deep-brain structures that are involved in speech and movement. Fetal and neonatal basal ganglia damage can result in motor, speech, and visual impairment. Basal ganglia damage is also known to cause cerebral palsy.
Basal ganglia damage can be caused by:
- Fetal or neonatal asphyxia (oxygen deprivation)
- Stroke, sometimes referred to as a basal ganglia stroke
Both asphyxia (oxygen deprivation) and basal ganglia stoke may be the result of birth injury malpractice.
