22 People Injured in New York Elevator Accident

People in New York and in tall buildings all over the world ride elevators many times every day.  Most of the time, these trips are made without giving safety a thought, and most of these trips go off without a problem.  However, when something goes wrong it can go very wrong, and unfortunately that was the case with a New York elevator accident that occurred yesterday that injured at least 22 people.  Authorities are investigating the situation, and early indications are that the elevator had a defective brake.

According to officials, this New York elevator accident occurred yesterday at 620 6th Avenue, between 18th Street and 19th Street.  According to witnesses, the elevator was ascending and was between the third and fourth floors when it started to fall towards the basement.  Ultimately, that's where the elevator car landed.  The elevator at issue had reportedly been in service for approximately 15 years with no issues or problems.  The 22 people who were injured suffered harm in varying degrees, but all are expected to survive.
